Photovoice
The photovoice component of this research uses participatory photography and videography to generate in-depth qualitative insights into local communities’ experiences of environmental and climate change, their coping mechanisms and areas of expertise for solutions and barriers which hinder their participation. Exploring and documenting these areas will facilitate community-led insights that can inform climate change response programming for indigenous communities that is responsible to local contexts as well as build community capacity for locally-led research and action.
This component uses both a staff training and a community engagement model to allow staff and community members to engage with photovoice and participatory action research as a means for communication and advocacy. This approach aims to increase the longevity of the use of these methods with local communities, feeding into locally-led initiatives and ongoing contributions of community members.

A tribal woman in Kothabari village, Hingalganj, recollects the havoc wrought by the Category 4 cyclone Amphan in May 2020. The eastern side of the village experienced the most damage, with homes knocked down, while embankment was breached on the western side and fisheries destroyed. Floodwater entering from the northern side impacted fruit trees. Livestock was killed in the entire village. Villagers immediately began embankment repair but were unable to cultivate their land for two years due to salinisation. It was a very trying time in the lives of the villagers. Kantamari village, Kultali: A tribal woman and her mother-in-law mourn the loss of the husband and son, a crab collector and fisherman, who recently lost his life to a tiger attack. Him being the sole earning member of a family that is landless, his loss has also had disastrous consequences for its food and financial security. His wife and mother tearfully lament their inability to send his two sons to school and feed and clothe them properly for want of an income.
